The wife of the President of the United States, Michelle Obama, and their nine-year-old daughter Sasha, will spend part of their summer holidays in Marbella. The visit will be from August 4 to 8 in the luxury Villapadierna Hotel, where 35 rooms have been reserved for family and friends.
Initial reports claimed the President would also visit but a statement from the White House denied this.

Jul 24, 2010, Marbella receives 5 blue flags for beaches
The Association of Environmental Education and the Consumer (Asociación de Educación Ambiental y del Consumidor) has awarded Marbella Town Hall with five blue flags. Four of them are for the beaches:Guadalmina-San Pedro, Venus-Bajadilla, Casablanca y Cabopino and another for the Fishing Port La Bajadilla in recognition for its quality of environment.
The foundation evaluates beaches and ports every year and are more demanding with each time. They evaluate the legality, cleanliness, accessibility, security and environmental management.
The municipal delegation mentioned that the award winning beaches have showers available along practically the whole beach as well as having public toilets and toilets available in all the chiringuitos (beach restaurants). They also have lifeguard services.
This year these beaches have improved its sanitation services with 24 new garbage areas (paper, glass and containers) as well as improved directions on the N340 highway.
