Rhinoplasty: currently one of the most commonly requested aesthetic treatments
In recent years rhinoplasty has become one of the most popular aesthetic treatments. The aim of the operation is to remodel the nose, the plastic surgeon removing any excess bone to reduce the volume until a straight profile is achieved.
There are two types of rhinoplasty:
- Functional surgery (also known as reconstructive surgery) to reposition the nasal septum in patients who have breathing problems.
- Corrective surgery (also known as aesthetic surgery) which modifies the nose altering the profile of the upper nasal bones and cartilage.
Despite their different objectives these two operations can be performed at the same time if the patient wishes.
Rhinoplasty usually takes between an hour and an hour and a half, generally requiring admission to hospital for 24 to 48 hours. It is normally performed under general anaesthetic, although local anaesthetic can also be used depending on whether it is the bone or cartilage which is being reduced.
The post-operative period will also depend on the type of rhinoplasty performed but usually lasts between 8 and 15 days.
