Advice for combatting allergies in the spring

Spring only started a couple of weeks ago, and we have already begun to notice some of the symptoms of allergies associated with this time of year.
The most common allergies in Southern Spain and the Mediterranean Area are allergies from Olive trees and grasses. Furthermore, pollination in this area always starts a little earlier, and this year the high temperatures which we saw in December and January have brought forward the pollination in plants such as Cypress and Arizona trees. According to the SEAIC’s Aerobiology Committee (The Spanish Society for Clinical Immunology and Allergology), the forecast for pollen levels in Andalucia this Spring will be the highest in Spain, along with the region of Extremadura.
In these cases prevention has become one of the most important factors. Today, Vithas Xanit International Hospital are offering advice in order to combat the most common allergies at this time of year:
First of all we need to diagnose the allergy. Although at times it isn’t easy to determine whether we are allergic to something, as the symptoms can be confused with those of a cold, it is important to see a specialist if we have some of the symptoms which are common with allergies: itching of the nose, eyes, palate, and on occasions also the ears. This can frequently be accompanied by sneezing, mucus, nasal congestion, red eyes, lacrimation of the eyes, the formation of blisters, difficulty in breathing, a cough or whistling sound in the chest

We now know that in order to prevent an allergic reaction and these symptoms, it is advisable to avoid visits to the countryside, or to areas with abundant vegetation (especially on windy days). It is also recommended to sleep with the windows closed, and to keep car windows shut too, (and to fit anti-pollen filters in the ventilation system of the car). It is also recommended to wear sunglasses, and to avoid exposure to unspecific irritants (smoke, dust, strong odours, cold and dry air, “sprays”, dispersed gases and vapors…), as well as extreme changes in temperature. Obviously it is fundamental that patients visit an allergologist in order to obtain the correct diagnosis and treatment with specific immunotherapy dependant on the type of pollen that they are allergic to.
Vithas Xanit International Hospital offers patients with allergies the most up-to-date diagnostic tests and treatments, some of which are immunological (using vaccinations). A multidisciplinary team of specialists, led by Dr. Clara Isabel Pérez Padilla, work closely together to offer all of the necessary medical services in order that the patient can control the pathology.
Furthermore, the hospital also offers adult and pediatric care with doctors who are renowned in this field, as well as new techniques to combat allergies such as desensibilisation through oral intolerance sustained over a period of time.
