Dog registration in Spain

by Rob Siddall
(San Pedro de Alcantara)

I have 2 small adopted Bjon type dogs which are chipped, have passports and are fully vaccinated. I am now told that we are supposed to register them. Can you please tell me how and where this is done. I live in San Pedro, Marbella.

not at the vet

The registration has to be done at the townhall not at the vets. Vets register microchips onto RAIA - which proves animal details and ownership. The official registration in the municipality is to inscribe the animal in the city. The procedure mentioned above is correct.

dog registration

A few weeks ago, I went through the process myself. You will need to Xerox your vaccination book, particularly those pages relative to the latest shots. Also you need a copy of the chip certificate which shows that you are the owner of the dog, and a copy of your passport /NIE. With the originals & copies, present yourself at the town hall, fill in a form, and your dog is now a legal Marbella resident. This probably implies that starting in 2013 all registered dog owners will be charged a municipal fee.

registering dogs in Marbella

Normally, you can go to vet and they'll do it for you. For instance Pointers in Nueva Andalucia.
