What a transformation Ben Ashir has made to what was the budget restaurant that preceded it on this site. Now, they aspire to be a ‘fine dining’ eatery with a nicely appointed, and tranquil dining room, with table settings, lighting, and decor in keeping with this. There is even a disabled lift to overcome the problem of the approach steps.

From the eight starters and eight mains compact menu, with prices sans IVA, we chose starters of Pil-Pil and a roasted Scallops with fennel puree and Asparagus garnished with Salmon Roe, that we shared. The two girls from our party of four opted for the roast duck breast with cherry sauce and crispy sweet potato for a main dish, whilst the men selected a Grilled Sole with a three citrus sauce and potato chip accompaniments, and I had a roast rack of venison in a wine and chocolate reduction with gorgonzola gnocchi. This was the first time I had eaten this particular cut of venison, and it is not to be repeated, as nearly a third of the meat was inedible, but the sauce was sensational as was the other two thirds of the venison. Apart from this niggle, all the other dishes were good, or very good.

The two talented Latvian chefs produced an enjoyable meal, but after being open for three months, we were the only customers there that evening, and I am doubtful that they have got the perceived quality/value formula quite right yet. Hopeful they will.
