History of padel tennis in Marbella
by: Marbella Family

Padel tennis is a very recent game. Most sources agree that it was invented in Mexico in the late 1960s, taking elements from paddle tennis and platform tennis.

Padel tennis was introduced to Spain by Alfonso de Hohenlohe who discovered it in 1974 in Mexico and decided to build the first padel courts at the Marbella Club.

Padel tennis quickly spread along the Costa del Sol, Madrid and other parts of Spain, but its Spanish roots are located in Andalucia.

The popularity of padel tennis is probably due to the fact that it can be played by players of all ages and skills. In addition, it is less physically demanding than similar sports like squash and, contrary to tennis where strength and powerful serves are critical, padel is a game where most people achieve a sufficient level of proficiency in a very short time.

The Weather
by: Anonymous

I think padel is played a lot in Marbella because of the weather. The Costa del Sol gets so much sunshine that you can play nearly every day of the year. I didn´t hear of it either before I moved to Spain. I tried it and thought it was pretty fun and not too difficult to pick up. Nearly every tennis club will offer a padel court and can organize partners for you.
