move my US car to Spain

by Chris
(Honolulu, Hi)

what would be your recommendation? I am moving to Costa Del Sol area in next 2 months. Should I purchase a new mercedes/BMW here and ship it and go through the registration hassles or wait until I get there and lease? I will be working there for at least the next 28 months.

Thanks everyone for your advice.
by: Chris

I appreciate the great advice. I will wait until I arrive and buy or lease. Anyone know someone in Honollulu who want a great deal on a 2007 Mercedes ML63 AMG? :)

Lease or buy car in Spain
by: Sarah

Definitely rent or buy here than ship over. Getting an ITV for a foreign car costs over 6 times more than a Spanish car and on top of that you have to make sure the car meets all the requirements under Spanish law which usually means you have to things like your lights and bumpers changed. This can cost THOUSANDS of euros. Not to mention the cost of shipping from the US.

Importing US cars to Spain
by: We Register Any Car (Paul Ripley)

Hi Chris

You need to have owned the car in a US state (example Honolulu, Hawai) for a minimum of 6 months before shipping the vehicle here to Spain. That also means your name in the cars Title Deed for the same 6 months period 'before' it leaves US soil.

So to go out a purchase a new car now, and then move to Spain within 2 months will mean Import duty of 28% here along with a further 16% registration taxes - thats a massive financial hit of 42% of the car fiscal book value in Spain. Thats not going to work out as the cost-effective route - unless you purchase the car now and leave it on US soil until its at least 6 months old, then ship it. We can then probably get the car imported for you completely free of all taxes as you are coming here to live for longer than 6 months! Your call ... but remembeer that cars in Spain cost a fortune compared to the US and Canada. Whatever you do we should discuss this in greater detail before booking a shipping agent as we need to handle certain parts of the shipping and customs work on your behalf. You have the choice of using Barcelona or Algerciras ports - the latter is very close to Marbella area which is where our head office is situated.
