LAMDA at Mayfair Academy
by: JULIE

On Monday 30th January 2012, students from Estepona Youth Theatre are going to give a presentation of their LAMDA pieces for the students of Mayfair Academy. The Youth Theatre would like to provide Mayfair Academy with the opportunity of becoming the main school on the coast for delivering excellence in these highly regarded examinations. As an ex Drama teacher of Aloha College I have been entering students for LAMDA examinations extremely successfully for nine years and look forward to working with the students of Mayfair Academy. It has such a welcoming friendly environment.

Mayfair and Laude experiences
by: Anonymous

My kids went to Mayfair Academy for a few years and were very happy there; however, when my oldest daughter was going into the secondary, I decided that a bigger school might be better so we transferred them to Laude International San Pedro last year. In Laude I liked the themed way of teaching in Primary and there were a lot of social activities in both Primary and Secondary that my kids enjoyed. However, my younger daughter's performance, who was in year 3 then, went substantially down and she was crying almost every morning, feeling extremely stressed, going to school (first time in her life)!!

This year I transferred my girls back to Mayfair mainly because my son, who is 4, was starting school. He wasn't happy at any of the kindergartens I sent him to before so I felt that Mayfair's small, family-like atmosphere and the fact that my younger daughter would be in the same building (unlike Laude) would be good for him. All my kids are very happy in school now and I never have problems with any of them in the morning going to school as I did when they were going to Laude.

Overall I feel that Mayfair is perfect for kids who are new to the country and need an environment that makes it easy to adopt, especially in their Primary school.

Re: previous comment
by: Anonymous

Very sorry but I felt the need to react to the precious comment.

Everybody is entitled to his/her opinion regarding certain schools, and for everybody a different school works.
Please don't tell me though that the comment about thefts etc is a cheap shot. My daughters mobile was stolen, and three more kids in her class had things "missing". Also kids in other classes had the same problems. Mr Kelly one day came into my daughters class and nobody could leave before they searched all bags. Why would he do this if it weren't true?
Same for the smoking part.
I have to agree with one thing though, it seems that there is something "funny " going on here. Every school has some positive and negative things written about them, some obviously more then others, but somehow somebody here feels they need to defend the school at all means if somebody writes something negative, maybe somebody very close to the school.... ?

Happy Mayfair parent
by: Anonymous

I too have followed this forum. I honestly do not understand the comments about Mayfair...only that there must be sour grapes against them as they are gaining ground against the larger schools which I can only put down to improved results and a modern, accessible, curriculum. The ex Swans teacher's comments must be correct from what I can see...dark forces at work. I put my children in Mayfair because of the small classes and more personal attention they offer. That to me is more important than facilities. Smoking and theft are cheap pot shots and the comment on teaching and teachers are completely unjustified and unfair. My son is achieving far better results than at his previous school...which I will not name as each school offers different things to different pupils. Mayfair works for my family and I am very happy with my decision. Other parents, in my experience, are of the same opinion. Don't understand...something 'funny' going on here!

Swan/Mayfair
by: Anonymous

Another mother told me about this forum. I think I can give you my experience since I know both schools. I just switched my daughter from Mayfair to Swans one month ago , also because I found that the level of teaching wasn't up to my standard. When I had a look at Swans and saw what they offered there for the same money I felt cheated by Mayfair. Mayfair should be costing half if you compare the installations, there is just no comparison.
There were lots of thefts in Mayfair , mobiles, mp3 etc. Kids smoking in the breaks, teachers looking the other way.

I can only tell you that I am over the moon with Swans, they seem to be much more professional , they have more home work and they need to study more then in Mayfair , but that's ok , they are in school after all to study and learn, right?
Over all I wish that I send her to Swan's sooner, can only recommend this school!

Swans
by: Ex Swans Teacher

As an ex Swans teacher I can confirm that the modus operandi at this school is to discredit other schools and it is not only Mayfair on the receiving end but also Aloha, Laude and any other school. I find this operating method to be most abhorrent and unprofessional especially when it is being instigated by the teaching staff. We are all aware that there are parents who will happily discredit every school on the coast as they have been searching for an educational miracle, which no school could provide, and there are others who move from school to school running up large debts which they have no intention of paying then they claim that they left their previous school as the teaching was inadequate. Fortunately, these parents are in the minority and intelligent, educated parents would not be impressed by the ´second-hand car salesman´ selling tactics being employed by Swans school.

my experience....
by: Anonymous

can only comment on what I've experienced myself ( my daughter went to Uni from this school):

great little school, generally well behaved pupils, very committed and professional staff, friendly and a breath of fresh air compared to some of the other 'bigger fish' on the coast....buyer beware of more 'aggressive' marketing techniques of other schools! Believe me, I've heard the hype from some schools and instead of selling themselves they prefer to dish the dirt on other schools. When my daughter moved to Mayfair, a handful of pupils also went with her from other mentioned schools below and stayed there and were very happy/successful there in terms of exam grades etc.

I response to buyer be aware
by: Elsa

Unfortunately I have to agree with Buyer be aware. I had my daughter in Mayfair for a year and although she was happy there regret that I ever put her there. Indeed the school is not the cleanest but more importantly they are not at the same level as other schools. My daughter switched to Swans. She had fantastic results in mayfair but I found out when she did the entrance exam in Swans that she was way behind. They told me in Swans that unfortunately this is the experience they usually have with kids coming from Mayfair, and indeed, I know 4 other kids myself who recently changed from Mayfair to Swans and they had the same problem.

response to Buyer Beware
by: Anonymous

After reading this load of rubbish I felt compelled to reply. My daughter attended Mayfair for years and was very happy there. She had great support from the staff and they were always very helpful. No school is perfect but what you have written is not just unfair, it is slanderous. In your presumably short visit you seem to have come to an awful lot of conclusions in a short space of time. Perhaps you are one of these 'super teachers' on hundreds of thousands, although I doubt it as you seem to struggle with basic spelling and grammar. What do you teach? Woodwork? It is disgusting that people like you are allowed to post such lies in a forum like this.

Mayfair Academy
by: Anonymous

I have met the headmaster of Mayfair, charming man and very informative. The building is lovely clean and tidy and I was impressed by the amount of students they got into University this year. I have high hopes that my children will get into uni through this school. Maybe the opinion of ?anonymous? is about as good as her spelling and grammar, or maybe she works for Laude.

Mayfair Academy
by: Anonymous

I don't normally respond to peoples negative opinions but I had to write and say I am really shocked to read these reviews. My daughter has been at Mayfair Academy for 5 years and in all the visits I've had to the school it's never been filthy, having run a successful cleaning company on the Coast for 9 years I think I would have noticed. On another note she's been incredibly happy there, staff have always been very informative and professional and as she's just received 3 grade A GSCE results, and we're expecting pretty much the same for the rest of her results, I think the teaching speaks for itself. I've spoken to my daughter and other parents about the comments that were made and all find them totally unfounded. Several children have just moved there from other International schools on the coast, I won't mention names as I don't think it's productive to slander anyone. Having lived here for 12 yrs I know that no school is perfect, but I can assure you that Mayfair is certainly not as bad as has been suggested.

exam results
by: Anonymous

I think their 100% pass rate to university was misleading in their ads I think 1 child applied and he/she got in, so in theory they are correct but obviously misleading. I think unlike the other International schools they take all comers which on one level is good but not if you then do not provide the support to both the children and adults at the school. My children attend Aloha College and I have on the whole always been very happy both with the standard of education provided and the pastoral care. My eldest is currently at University in England having gone through Aloha and getting good grades.

Where are your kids?

This comment is for the Buyer Beware comment. In the end, which school did you choose for your children? And, although it may be early to tell, are you happy with your choice?

Mayfair Academy Marbella
by: Marbella Family

Mayfair Academy offers primary and secondary education for children aged 4 to 18 years old following the British National Curriculum. Located in Atalaya Park, Estepona approximately 10 minutes from Marbella, Mayfair Academy is a school that leads children to their GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) and A Levels.

We don´t have our own children in this school, so we can´t give you much of an evaluation. We do know however that it is one of the only schools on the coast that offers a special sports curriculum in English for students after year 9 who may choose to continue the standard British curriculum or follow the Sports Curriculum which consists of eight GCSE subjects, AQA unit awards, VRQ level one Assistant Gym Instructor and various other awards in a variety of fields of study. Sports Curriculum students can achieve VRQ Level 2 Gym Instructor Award in year 12 and VRQ Level 3 Personal Trainer Award in year 13 with the added option of A Level PE. They say that Sports curriculum students leave the Academy as fully qualified Advanced Gym Instructors / Personal Trainers.

Mayfair Academy is relatively small compared to its counterparts such as Aloha, Laude and EIC, which may or may not suit your child. And I believe they are lower in price.

Mayfair Academy has both an outdoor pool and heated indoor pool as well as a fully equipped fitness center, which is a not found in all of the other international schools in Marbella. Mayfair Academy also has buses running from Elviria to Duquesa.

Our neighbor has her son enrolled in Mayfair and she seems very happy with her choice. If you want to find out more about Mayfair you can find their website at www.mayfairacademy.com, contact them at (+34) 952 784 923 F: (+34) 952 789 381 or send the an email to info@mayfairacademy.com.
