Labor Day in Spain
May 1st is Labor Day in Spain. This is a national holiday celebrating Spain´s economic and social achievements for workers all over the country.
Also known as May Day, Labor Day means that most businesses are closed on May 1st. Public offices and schools are closed, shops and commercial centers close, public transport runs on a "holiday schedule" meaning reduced lines and times, museums and restaurants are usually open as well as other attractions that often even have extended opening hours, and you may have noticed already that taxi and toll road fares increase to take advantage of the holiday makers, particularly in Marbella.
When Labour Day falls on a weekend or close to one, then another day may be taken off to create a "puente" (bridge) so that the public can have a longer holiday. This year 2012 Labour Day falls on a Tuesday.
You can usually count on good weather in Marbella during the month of May, so break out that swimsuit and head to the beach. Marbella is well known for its "chiringuitos" (beach bars/restaurants) so it is a perfect day to try one out. Be sure to make reservations, because as most businesses are closed and kids are out of school, going out for lunch is what most locals and tourists do, so it may get crowded.
