La Plaza - Mijas Costa

The approach to La Plaza

The approach to La Plaza

It must be 15 or so years since last we ate on Riviera del sol which is where we lived when we first moved here from the Costa Brava some 30 years ago. Much has changed in the intervening years including a Centro Commercial building that is where La Plaza first opened its doors some 7 years ago. The ‘L’ shaped dining room must have close to 100 covers and was adequately staffed to cope with these numbers. Nice décor and place settings, and then there was the entertainment. This particular performer insisted on having the PA volume set at a level that can only be described by the phrase
“You WILL listen to me”
I pass no judgment as to the merits of his voice, or how good his ’tribute performance was, but only to the Impact on OUR evenings enjoyment. We moved tables twice, once because we were seated in a corner that had some noisy neon light control gear that was fan cooled and causing a blast of cold air over one of our guests, and secondly in an attempt to get as far away as possible from the Ghetto Blasters, but even so, conversation between our party of four was reduced to a shouting match. I’m sure there are those amongst that revel in this environment - but not us.

So much for the niggle, but what about the food? This eatery comes highly recommended on most of the TripAdvisor reviews and our anticipation levels were high. From a comprehensive menu Incorporating all the dishes you would expect to find from a high end Italian restaurant we chose: Minestrone soup, Mussels Marinera (in tomato sauce) that was somewhat over salted, and a small portion of excellent Spaghetti Bolognaise for starters, followed by Rossini Fillet steaks that would have benefitted from the rather large amount of gravy being served separately in a gravy boat, Liver Venisiana , and Escallopine Marsala that apart from the probability that the Marsala sauce was made with the Secco rather than the dulce Marsala wine, was also excellent. The vegetables were al dente and all of the other dishes were good in taste, texture, presentation and with generous portions, such that no one could face a dessert. Staff were ‘clued up’ and our waiter Cristobel attentive. This is a border line case between expectation and reality that is reflected in the marks that I have given.
