Home Schooling Costa del Sol

Good evening,

I hope you are well.

We are thinking of relocating to Marbella and I'd like to know if there is a group of homeschoolers in the area my older children could meet up with in the afternoons and weekends, or if any international school accepts homeschooled children to enroll in extracurricular activities. They are 16 and 14, our youngest, soon to be 6, will be attending school.

Hey there! Urgently looking for advice! I have a 5 year old boy who is on the autism spectrum. I am hitting brick walls on trying to get some sort of advice or approval to homeschool him. Not only is this something I really want to do because I truly appreciate every day I get to teach him, but here’s just a few extra reasons why he isn’t suited to school although he is classed as high functioning.
1) He is PETRIFIED of children.
2) Loud noises, unexpected movements, etc.
3) He would be completely stunted in a school setting because his little brain is an intelligent masterpiece!

The problem is - Nobody else is with him besides me everyday, and nobody is listening to me when I relay his struggles or his intellect. I feel as though I am being forced into registering him into public school. I am a single parent and I don’t have the funds to send him to a private school (even if I did, he wouldn’t go in the same room as another child) I have spoken with the autism association of Malaga and they just state the blanket saying of ‘autistic children are in school at the age of 3’ I also appreciate there’s therapy sessions he can attend to ‘grow him out of his quirks’ 😣 and have him ready for school asap…

This just isn’t the road I want him to have right now. Over the years he has grown through his fears and I know he will do so again in his own time with guidance from me. Furthermore I have a 5 year old child who can do multiplications like 15 x 9 or 10,000 x 300 with ease, name every country, every flag, read books like a 9 year old, the list could go on and on!

I have been instructed by the conserjería de education to take him to my 3 local public schools asap for admissions, so I feel as though I am on a time crunch.

Does anybody have absolutely any information or experience that might help, no matter how small.

We are originally from the UK but are residents here.

Hi all,
It is great to hear that there are so many homeschoolers around Malga!
I have had a lot of experience in homeschooling, especially after schooling my older boys through their IGCSEs and currently my 14 year old daughter. So I'm a bit of an expert on the matter lol.
The problem is that now I feel I have lost my energy but I am not happy with my 5 and 7 year old being in school. I am trying to pluck the courage to homeschool them but wanted to check if there is a community out there.
I live in a farm and had wanted to create a little homeschooling community and time for the children to connect with nature, hopefully it would make life as a homeschool mum a little bit easier, especially since I want them to have a social life.

Hi,

Homeschooling is in a grey area in Spain. My daughter having been born in Spain but holding a French passport like me, had a certificate from our Embassy confirming she was following a government approved curriculum, when she enrolled with CNED, the French official homeschooling program, I had to provide them with said certificate in order to enroll her. It changes with every country, I recommend you contact your Embassy. Best of luck !

Route to Homeschooling

Question:

We currently live in Malaga province but anticipating to relocate in about 18-24 months to our home country, within the EU.

It seems, homeschooling is a "grey-area" - our kids 13 & 15 have been following the Spanish public school system since their youngest age. They are born here in Malaga province but we have 2 different European Nationalities, neither one of us is Spanish. Due to a very dissapionting ESO education and in anticipation of further education in either one of the "home" countries we feel it is better to start rather sooner with homeschooling, that will help them to integrate further down the line. Our homecountries provide total legal and recognised homeschooling opportunities, but so it seems Spain has no national guidelines.

Does anybody has experience - comments to take their kid(s) out of Spanish schools and subscribed to homeschooling? We do know the route to "register" them as residents back home for a short while and legally return back to Spain "temporarily" which allows temporarily "homeschooling".

Any comment is welcome 🙏

Me and my two sons aged 10 and 5 plan to take some time off and move to Spain for a undecided time. We have not decided yet if it is Marbella, Mijas or Benalmaldena that we are aiming for.
I love them all but want to find what would be best for my boys.

A family established in Marbella is willing to start a learning pod with other interested families (children from 10 to 12 years) following British advanced Education. Lessons will be offline with full-time teachers at our location. Students will also have enough space for practicing different sports and outdoor activities.
We are looking for gifted children with passion for math, science and technology as this will be our main focus. Our children will also get prepared for international Olympiads. Hi,
There are schools that take external candidates, depending on which exam your children will be taking, Cambridge or Edexcel, they should have the approved examination centers’ info. on their website.
Not sure where you are on the Coast, but Swans takes external candidates and maybe Emerald too.

As mentioned by other contributors, homeschooling is not officially recognised here, so any studies undertaken outside a Spanish or international school registered with the local education authority will not subsequently be eligible for validation. All that said, as you can see from this thread, there are many families who choose to homeschool here. Some use online platforms, others employ tutors and many come to us for advice, support and teaching. We are an independent English learning centre and have been supporting Primary and Secondary learners with the UK curriculum for over 30 years. Homeschooling? Sort of.

Hello all,

Homeschooling, per se, is not yet recognized by the Spanish government as legitimate. Up to 16 years, a child must be enrolled in a properly certified school. Unless and until the rules are modified, this is the deal — in stone. Caveat emptor.

That said, I have been tutoring successfully for 10 years in my fields of expertise, for which I hold full university degrees: Mathematics, Economics, and Business. Most of my students are enrolled in school, minimum age 16 +, and either need assistance to understand and excel in their subjects, or want to move their grades from high to highest.

I have home schooled a few students, but they are much older and have left school for many reasons: learning disabilities, panic and anxiety, bullying, incompetent teachers, etc. I insist on in full parental consent, in writing; and if necessary a psychological workup.

There is no IVA (VAT) levied on legitimate education. I am completely out in the open and fully registered with the Spanish tax authorities as a self-employed professor, and pay tax on my income. Believe me, this is the best way to go if one is serious.

I also assist students applying to university, with specialisation in USA universities.

Well... it depends. Being French, my daughter was homeschooled for a couple of years when we arrived in Spain and as long as we had a letter from our consulate and she was registered with the French homeschooling program in France we were fine, the Spanish government couldn't say anything about it. I guess it depends on your nationality too.

I run a Lamda (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts) class on a Saturday afternoon and Wednesday evening at the Marbella Hotel Kids Club. This could be a good way for your youngsters to meet others and gain extra qualifications. The exams are QCA accredited and success at each level gains students credit points towards university entrance

There are no group of home school teachers in Marbella and I think you will find it very difficult to put your children in to any of the International schools for a short spell. However I do know that Sotogrande International school is starting a flexible learning programme, therefore it might be worth you getting in touch with them.

We have 3 girls, ages 15, almost 13, almost 11
