Dogs and beach
by: Veronika

Our dog love to go to the beach, but more he loves to swim in the see. It makes it difficult not to take him while we live right by the beach. I would never take him there in summer or on a hot day, that could do only idiot or someone who does not think clearly!:-)
The best time is to go early in the morning or very late in the evening when there are not so many people around.
To react to one of the posted comment: yes I pick up the excrements after my dog because I like to go to the beach too and no one likes to lay in between shit. And not only on the beach...no one likes to walk on the sidewalk and have a feeling like on the mine-field, right? But since you are a dog owner it must have happen to you that you run out of the bags, just because your dog has an extremely big portion of food in the morning and the result is more then average poo which you were not prepared for!??
Having a dog off the leash could be a problem. I prefer to give him freedom and to give him attention playing with him. But according me you can do this only if you know that your dog behave and listens to you.
All is about us, people, we have to be more responsible and tolerant to each other!

Why allow Dogs on a beach ?
by: Denis Amergin

Frankly I amazed that anyone would think it was ok to bring a dog to a beach! It's not a natural environment for a dog, It can get very hot, there is no drinking water, dogs poo and that gets into the sea and sand ( PLEASE dont tell me that every dog owner picks up after their dog/dogs, they do not.

Dogs cannot sweat like humans and their feet are
extremely sensitive to heat and they can even die from extreme heat.

Do I hate dogs ? NO.NO.NO I do not, I have two and I would never dream of taking them to a beach, beaches are for humans to enjoy, dogs bark and bark and bark, it's natural, it's what they do, but it's not a Natural sound to people, in fact it's very irritating when it continues all day.

Some people think it's ok to break the rules by
not having their dogs on a leash, but if it's the Law why break it, you only give other Dog owners
a bad name.

Take your dogs into the country away from people
and enjoy yourselves, bring lots of water, scoopers, and pick up the poo.

by: Lesley

There is supposed to be an area designated for dogs on the beach next to Beatrice Palace Hotel on the way out of Fuengirola. I'm going to look for it later this week

Calahonda Beach

The beach at Calahonda seems to have a 'local' rule that dogs are allowed even in the summer month when people are sunbathing.

Los Pacos
by: Ali Meehan

Hello dog Walkers!
Los Pacos is just behind Los Boliches in Fuengirola off the N340 (located between the motorway and Calle Alcalá Galiano). Its a great park called "Guau Guau" (Woof woof in Spanish) and is the largest of its kind in Andalucia (over 5,000 sqm). It also has a number of other features including running area, exercise and fitness area and also a "Pipican".

Dog Park, Los Pacos
by: Anonymous

There is a wonderful dogpark right by the highway and about 30 meters from the gas-station.
I have been there several times with my little pooch and he loves it.
It is a free open highly secured space. No holes in the fences (if there WERE, my dog would've been gone a long time ago. hehe)
There are pleasant people coming there with their dogs and everybody talks and has a laugh while the dogs are running around playing.

You should take your dog there. You will NOT regret it!

Marbella

I've also been warned recently by several people on the beaches in Marbella that the police have started getting stricter handing out fines for having your dog play off the lead. One guy even said he had been fined recently and that it can be between 500 and 1000 euros. He also said that the police are plain clothed officers so you can't even check to see if the coast is clear. I always walk my dog down on the beach around 7:30 and haven't been caught so far....

Dog walking on San Pedro paseo
by: Zora

I took my dog this morning (on the lead) with me for a jog and saw everyone with their dogs on leads. One lady warned me to keep my dog on the lead because the police are coming around to check. I didn't see any police (it was 8:00am), but didn't want to risk it, especially after the warning I got.

I think it is legal between the months of October and February everywhere. It's during sun bathing months that it is not legal.

Dog friendly beaches in Marbella
by: Zora

As far as I know, we are not allowed to bring our dogs on the beach...ever. I do see dogs on the beach, however, in winter and the police doesn't seem to enforce it. But I understand that starting in March 2012 there is a special police force from Marbella Town Hall that will start enforcing the public to keep their dogs on leashes, clean up after them and have muzzles on dogs that are over 20 kg or are of a dangerous breed. The fines will be quite high, so not sure if you want to risk it.

Several years ago I had my dog on a very quiet part of the beach in Tarifa in August and was told by the police to remove my dog from the beach. I wasn't aware of the rule then and didn't think much about it considering there were dogs everywhere at the time in Tarifa. I just assumed everywhere was dog-friendly. I guess I was lucky and wasn't fined.

Unfortunately, I haven't heard of any dog-friendly beaches on the coast. Nor have I heard of an official dog park or zone. I would love to find out if there were some areas so that the dogs can play in an area without a leash and without the fear of being fined.
