October 12

Normally businesses and schools are closed only on October 12, however there are a few that close on October 11 in order to get a long weekend out of the holiday (puente). The rest of the week is considered a normal working week.

October 12 - Dia de la Hispanidad
by: Marbella Family

Dia de la Hispanidad (Hispanic Day) is celebrated on October 12 all throughout Spain and is one of Spain´s biggest public holidays. On this day in 1492 Christopher Columbus landed in the Bahamas from Spain and discovered the Americas.

In Spain some cities hold parades and aeronautic displays. So far, we are not aware of any celebrations in Marbella for this holiday. All public offices close by law and public transport is reduced to a minimum. However, in Marbella this year the department store El Corte Ingles and La Cañada shopping mall are scheduled to be open. Also, restaurants, bars, museums and attractions are usually open and sometimes offer extended hours knowing that their clientele increases on this day.

The US also celebrates this day as Christopher Columbus Day, but it is observed on October 11th. Other countries in the Americas commemorate this day as well, but under different names such as Día de la Raza, Día de las Culturas (Costa Rica), Discovery Day (Bahamas) or Día de las Américas (Uruguay).
